Developer attention moved from headsets to glasses. The stories that go viral carry facial-recognition language.

The developer conversation around AI wearables, read whole: 5,471 Hacker News documents since 2023, each carrying its real engagement score. Both findings above are measured below.

The attention rotation

Vision Pro owned the conversation exactly once: 438 stories in the launch quarter, 2024-Q1, out of 1,019 total. By 2025 it settled near twenty stories a quarter and stayed there. The general smart-glasses conversation ran the opposite arc: roughly eleven stories a quarter through 2023, then a sustained climb to 38–66 a quarter through 2025–26. In 2026-Q2 the glasses conversation outran Vision Pro 66 stories to 17. Developer attention rotated from the headset to the glasses form factor.

What makes a wearables story go viral

Splitting the 1,565 stories into engagement quartiles puts the median top-quartile story at 43 points and comments against 1 for the bottom quartile. The language that separates the top quartile is not product-spec vocabulary. It is surveillance vocabulary: recognition appears in 8 top-quartile stories and zero bottom-quartile ones, facial in 7 against zero; monitor and wearing follow the same split. Meta itself runs at 2.3 times the bottom-quartile rate, and meta glasses at 2.7. The stories the developer community amplifies about this category are the ones about being watched, and Meta's products anchor that conversation.

In the Ray-Ban Meta thread language, the term dox runs at thirty-nine times its rate in the rest of the wearables corpus. The privacy conversation sits at the center of the product's developer discourse.

The product vocabularies

Each product's conversation carries its own distinctive language. Vision Pro discourse is app-and-content vocabulary (pro app, pro video, the headset itself). Quest discourse still orbits Rift-era VR and immersion. The Ray-Ban Meta conversation is dominated by wearing-in-public and identification themes, dox the sharpest of them. The general glasses conversation carries the replace-your-phone frame: glasses display, glasses app, glasses replace; Nreal is the most-named challenger.

Source: Hacker News via its official public API, January 2023 through the run date; queries covering Vision Pro, Ray-Ban Meta and Meta glasses, Quest 3, and the general smart/AR/AI-glasses conversation; documents deduplicated by ID, with per-query fetches capped at the API's thousand newest per document type, which trims only the earliest weeks of the Vision Pro thread. Product vocabularies: differential term analysis, each product's documents against all others, minimum eight documents per term. Engagement language: top story quartile against bottom by points plus comments, minimum six documents per term. Counts and the full run file accompany every claim.

Art of the Possible

The production version adds the sources where wearables sentiment concentrates, Reddit's headset and glasses communities and the developer forums, runs continuously, and alerts on movement: a rising term, a shifting sentiment cluster, a competitor's launch changing the conversation's shape.
