Language Report · 001 · Jobs Data
A reading of keyword emergence across 56,712 Data Science and HR postings from California, New York, and remote listings, August 2023 through July 2026.
Between August 2023 and June 2024, the phrase agentic AI appears in zero Data Science postings in the corpus. Between January 2025 and July 2026 it appears in roughly 121 to 136, spread across 60 to 68 distinct employers on some 24 job boards, with no employer holding more than about 9 percent of the mentions. A term that broad-based this early is a market adopting a category. The surrounding vocabulary moved with it.
| Term | Movement | Breadth |
|---|---|---|
| agentic ai | 0 postings → 121–136 | 60–68 employers, ~24 boards |
| ai engineer | 4.65x share growth | 280 companies |
| python (named in the title) | 4.4x growth | broad-based |
| generative ai | 4.1% → 3.0% of postings | share ceded to descendants |
Generative AI, the generic two-word phrase, is in relative decline because its descendants are taking its share: agentic AI, applied AI, and AI engineer now carry the demand the umbrella term used to carry. Employers name the work more precisely as the work becomes real. This movement from general to specific vocabulary is the market's own signal that a category has moved from talk to hiring plans.
Generative AI's share of the hiring language is falling because its children are taking it.
4.1 percent to 3.0 percent of Data Science postings while agentic AI, applied AI, and AI engineer grow
The same movement runs through 38,164 HR postings. Specific-function titles grew 1.7x to 3.9x faster than the corpus: Total Rewards, HRIS, People Operations, Employee Experience, Shared Services, Payroll, Onboarding. Generic Human Resources held flat at 60 percent of postings and Generalist declined 26 percent. The function is itemizing itself.
AI reached HR's own titles in the same window: 22 distinct positions across 17 employers name AI explicitly, a vocabulary that was absent from HR titles before 2025. Two real declines run alongside: Diversity mentions fell 64 percent, and the President of Human Resources title convention fell 71 percent.
Every headline number was independently re-derived before publication. Terms driven by a single employer's bulk postings or by shifts in job-board mix were removed; more than eighty apparent signals died in that screen, including several that looked as convincing as the ones above.
This reading runs quarterly on the full database as the firm's recurring index of AI labor demand. The same engine runs continuously on a named set of employers and surfaces new vocabulary as it enters their postings. Categories and teams appear there first.
Corpus: the firm's proprietary postings database, patented and in production since 2018. Population: 18,548 Data Science and 38,164 HR postings in California, New York, or remote roles, August 2023 through July 2026. Differential term analysis with screens for job-board mix shifts and single-employer bulk-posting artifacts. Unsettled: a third domain, Operations, shows directionally similar movement and is held out of this report until its filter ships as reproducible code.
